Privacy Policy
At RememberBill, we prioritize your privacy above all else. Our approach is simple: your data stays on your device. This Privacy Policy explains how the RememberBill Chrome Extension ("RememberBill," "Extension," "we," "our," or "us") handles your information.
1. Local-First Philosophy
RememberBill is built on a local-first approach to privacy:
- All your financial information and bill data are stored exclusively on your device using your browser's secure local storage.
- No sign-up, account creation, or personal information collection is required to use RememberBill.
- Your data never leaves your device unless you specifically choose to export it.
- Except for the anonymous analytics traffic described in Section 3 (if you opt in), no bill content or personal information is ever transmitted off your device.
2. Information We Don't Collect
To be absolutely clear, RememberBill does not collect:
- Your name, email, or any personal identifiers
- Financial account information, balances, or transaction details
- Bill amounts, due dates, or payment history
- Browsing history or website activity outside the Extension
- Location data, device information, or complete IP addresses
RememberBill proxies Google Analytics via Measurement Protocol; we truncate IP addresses before transmission and do not store them at any point.
We never sell or share any data—anonymous or otherwise—with third parties.
3. Optional Analytics
To help improve the Extension, we offer an optional analytics program:
- Analytics are strictly opt-in and disabled by default
- Analytics can be enabled or disabled via the Settings panel at any time
- If enabled, we collect anonymous usage data through Google Analytics, including:
- Feature usage patterns (specifically: feature name, timestamp, anonymized user ID)
- Integer counts only (e.g., "bills_total: 12")
- Extension open frequency
- We generate a random anonymous ID for analytics purposes that cannot be linked to you personally
- We never collect bill names, amounts, due dates, or any personal financial details
- Analytics data is transmitted securely using HTTPS to our analytics provider
- Aggregated analytics logs are retained for 26 months (Google Analytics default) and automatically deleted thereafter
For more information about how Google processes this data, please see Google's Privacy Policy.
The extension sends data only to https://www.google-analytics.com/mp/collect
; it does not download or execute any other remote code.
You can view your current analytics preference and change it anytime by:
- Opening RememberBill
- Clicking the Settings icon (⚙️) in the top right
- Going to the "Analytics & Privacy" section
- Toggling "Allow Anonymous Usage Data" on or off
4. How Your Data Is Stored
RememberBill uses your browser's built-in local storage mechanisms:
- Data is stored using IndexedDB and localStorage, standard browser storage technologies
- Your information remains within your browser environment
- Data is stored un-encrypted in Chrome local storage; it is protected by your browser profile and OS login
- We recommend creating periodic manual backups of your data through the Export feature
Exported JSON or CSV backups are saved un-encrypted to the location you choose; please store or transmit them securely.
5. Browser Permissions
RememberBill requires the following browser permissions:
- Storage – save your bill information locally.
- Alarms – schedule background checks for upcoming bills.
- Notifications – show reminders even when the popup is closed.
- Host permission (google-analytics.com) – send anonymous, opt-in usage metrics.
We request only the minimum permissions necessary for functionality.
6. Data Retention and Deletion
Since all data is stored locally:
- Your data remains on your device until you choose to delete it
- Uninstalling the Extension will permanently delete all associated data
- You can clear all data through the Extension settings at any time
To delete analytics data tied to your anonymous ID, email contact@rememberbill.co with the ID shown in Settings → Privacy.
7. Security
While we've designed RememberBill with security in mind:
- Your data's security depends partly on your browser's security and your device settings
- We recommend keeping your browser updated and using device security features like screen locks
- We don't have access to your data and cannot recover it if lost
- All analytics events are sent via HTTPS with an ephemeral API secret; servers enforce least-privilege IAM and access controls
8. Your Privacy Rights (GDPR & CCPA)
Residents of the European Economic Area or United Kingdom have the right to access, correct, or erase any personal data we hold. Because we store only anonymous analytics, exercising these rights generally means requesting deletion of your anonymous ID, which we will honor within 30 days.
California residents may likewise request deletion of any information associated with their anonymous ID. We do not "sell" or "share" personal information as those terms are defined by the CCPA.
To exercise any of these rights, email contact@rememberbill.co with the anonymous ID shown in Settings → Privacy.
9. Children's Privacy
RememberBill is not intended for use by individuals under 18 years of age. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy occasionally to reflect changes in our practices or for other operational, legal, or regulatory reasons. When we make changes, we will update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this policy.
Major changes will be announced via an in-extension banner or release notes.
